Hi, my name is Niurka Ozuna. I am a proud New York native who grew up in the Bronx, attended Fordham University, earned a degree in Business Administration and Management, and then completed my first management consulting project, all in the Bronx.
In 2022, I established Niuo Group LLC and published What‛s Wrong with Grandma? ¿Qué le pasa a abuelita? a book that serves as a conversation starter about mental health. As a NAMI-NYS 2024 Off The Mask Model, I am excited to share my story and contribute towards starting conversations that build awareness and educate.
What‛s Wrong with Grandma? ¿Qué le pasa a abuelita? is based on my personal experience of caring for my mother with schizophrenia. The story takes place during a family visit where two siblings see Grandma’s change in behavior leading up to her going to the hospital. The children then receive a heartfelt explanation to help build understanding, love, and compassion.
Growing up my search for information about schizophrenia always led to dead ends. This motivated me to create a book to serve as a resource for starting the mental health conversation. The bilingual text engages readers of all ages in a sensitive yet informative manner about a condition that affects individuals and families within our communities and beyond. What‛s Wrong with Grandma? ¿Qué le pasa a abuelita? ends the silence, breaks the stigma, and shouts off with the mask!
