I’m David Morgenstern, I was diagnosed at age 46, I am now 72. Its occurrence was no fault of mine. I have learned to control its negative behaviors. Prior to learning techniques of control my life was a disaster. I have had two divorces, and I am estranged from my three adult children and grandchildren. I was also dismissed from multiple jobs due to my behavior. After thirty years of treatment, I can lead a normal life though my learning continues.
I have a diagnosis of Bipolar 2. This had created negative experiences in my personal and professional life. Through therapy, support, and educating myself on my diagnosis I am proud to say I can control the illness versus it controlling me. I am thankful for the support in battling my challenges. I am paying forward my experiences through working towards becoming a Peer Specialist.
I am here for two reasons: to show that a mental health challenge doesn't have to be a lifelong impediment, share my lived experiences with being a victim of a mental disorder. I believe that without our acceptance of our challenges healing is impeded, if we can't accept ourselves how can others accept us. It is not unusual for mental health patients to wear a proverbial mask to cover their challenges. This event is visually symbolic of us discarding our masks to show we are humans.
