Our Time: Prioritizing Mental Health in Today's World.
The 2023 NAMI-NYS Education Conference - Our Time: Prioritizing Mental Health in Today's World will explore, discuss, and celebrate the advancements made in mental health in the last years while also shedding light on the challenges and barriers that continue to impact our collective mental health. The main goal of the conference is to identify the next steps needed to help increase access to mental health support for all people and family members living with mental illness in New York while creating awareness and demonstrating the importance of the work NAMI-NYS and its affiliates do. Our Education Conference Planning Committee and staff have been hard at work in gathering impactful speakers and identifying trending topics for the NAMI-NYS 2023 Education Conference. This will be an event that you don't want to miss. The Conference will have the participation of leaders, advocates, allies, and individuals with lived experience who have used their stories to advocate, create awareness, and support the 1 in 5 individuals who live with a mental illness in the US.
You cannot afford to miss out on the NAMI-NYS 2023 Education Conference. Gain exclusive access to resources, information, and services. Network with like-minded individuals who share your passion for mental health and engage with leaders and advocates. Discover NAMI-NYS and its affiliates' positive impact on the state by providing free education, training, advocacy, and support groups. Prioritize mental health, and take a stand for those impacted by mental illness.
Our featured Friday Lunch Conversation "Anyone Can Be a Hero: A Conversation with Community Champions" is aimed to empower participants to become mental health champions in their communities. Anyone can be a hero, not because it is an easy feat, but because we all have stories that fuel our passion and a desire to create a world where people with mental illnesses can live healthy, fulfilling lives surrounded by a community that cares.
The Friday session features an inspiring discussion with five of this year's NAMI-NYS honorees. All of who have taken upon themselves the task of improving the world around them. They will share their journey as Mental Health Advocates. Mike Gabler will talk about his decision to donate the million-dollar Survivor Prize to organizations that work with Veteran's mental health and the impact that it had. Joe Smarro and Ernie Stevens will explain how they aimed to improve interactions between law enforcement and people with mental health issues, sparking a national movement. Jeremiah Brown shares how he turned a personal tragedy into an opportunity to advocate for student and student athletes' mental health through his leadership. Isaiah Santiago will tell his story of overcoming struggles in school and with gun violence and establishing a nonprofit organization at the age of 16 to remove guns from the street. Each one of these stories is an opportunity to be inspired and learn about other people's experiences.
